Swearing, messy desks and late nights have all been linked to intelligence

todaySeptember 20, 2026

Background

There may finally be some good news for the messy, sleep-deprived potty mouths among us.

Research has found links between certain habits that are usually considered negative and different measures of verbal ability, creativity and cognitive performance.

One study found that people who could produce more swear words also tended to perform better in general verbal fluency tasks. This suggests that swearing does not necessarily indicate a limited vocabulary.

Separate research found that people working in untidy environments produced more creative ideas, although orderly spaces were associated with healthier and more conventional choices.

Studies have also reported associations between staying up late and certain measures of cognitive ability.

However, none of this proves that swearing, creating a disaster on your desk or going to bed at 3am will make you more intelligent.

Still, it is a comforting excuse for anyone who does all three.
