Some police dogs are put up for adoption for being too friendly

todaySeptember 16, 2026

Background

It turns out that some dogs can be too friendly for police work.

In the United States, dogs that do not meet the requirements for government or law enforcement work may occasionally be made available for adoption.

Reasons for being released from training can include nervousness, a lack of drive or simply having a personality that is better suited to family life. In other words, being too interested in cuddles and making friends could end a pup’s policing career.

The adoption process can be competitive, and future owners must be prepared to care for an energetic and highly trained animal. The US Transportation Security Administration operates an official adoption programme for dogs that do not meet its training criteria.
