Portuguese Man O’ War Spotted In Malta Weeks Earlier Than Expected

todayFebruary 28, 2026

Background

A Portuguese man o’ war has been spotted on Maltese shores weeks earlier than usual, sparking curiosity among locals and marine enthusiasts.

The striking organism, often mistaken for a jellyfish but actually a floating siphonophore colony, was photographed beached in St Julian’s and later shared by marine biologist Alan Deidun. While the timing is unusual, experts say there is no need for alarm.

These creatures typically appear between March and May after being pushed into the Mediterranean by strong Atlantic winds. Scientists believe recent storms and persistent westerly winds may have caused this year’s early arrival.

Despite their colourful appearance, Portuguese man o’ wars can deliver painful stings that remain active even after washing ashore. Beachgoers are being urged not to touch them and to report sightings through local monitoring initiatives.
