Space continues to offer some of the most extraordinary sights in the universe.
NGC 2442, commonly known as the Meathook Galaxy, is located approximately 50 million light-years from Earth. Images captured by the NASA and ESA Hubble Space Telescope reveal its unusual and dramatically distorted shape.
Astronomers believe the galaxy’s appearance may have been caused by a close encounter or collision with another galaxy around 200 million years ago. One of its spiral arms is tightly curled, while the other has been stretched significantly by the gravitational interaction.
The galaxy was first discovered by astronomer Sir John Herschel in 1834. It has also hosted two observed supernovae, adding to its scientific importance and fascinating history.
NGC 2442 offers another striking reminder of how dynamic and constantly changing our universe truly is.
