It is hard to imagine anyone other than Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, but the Oscar-winning actress has now revealed she nearly turned down one of the most iconic roles of her career.
In a new interview, Streep admitted that when she first received the script for The Devil Wears Prada, she was seriously considering retirement and initially declined the offer.
Despite immediately recognizing that the film had blockbuster potential, Streep said she felt it was time to step away from Hollywood after decades in the industry.
Instead, she made a bold move. She doubled her salary demand, and the studio accepted.
The decision changed everything.
The film went on to gross over $325 million globally and cemented Miranda Priestly as one of cinema’s most unforgettable characters.
Now, twenty years later, Streep is preparing to revisit the role once again in the highly anticipated sequel.
