Malta’s children return to school later than anywhere else in the EU

todaySeptember 17, 2026

Background

Maltese students get to hold onto their summer holidays for a little longer than children elsewhere in the European Union.

Schools in Malta traditionally reopen towards the end of September, making the country’s back-to-school season one of the latest across the EU.

While students in several European countries return to their classrooms during August or at the beginning of September, children in Malta continue enjoying their holidays for several more weeks.

It might be great news for students who are not quite ready to put their uniforms back on. For parents trying to keep everyone entertained after a very long summer, however, the final weeks of September can feel slightly different.

Enjoy it while it lasts, kids.
