A touching story of loyalty has led to a real legal change in Brazil, after a dog that spent years beside his owner’s grave inspired a new law allowing pets to be buried in family cemetery plots.
Bob, known locally as “Bob Gravedigger,” lived for a decade at a cemetery in São Paulo after attending his owner’s funeral, repeatedly returning to the grave despite attempts to take him home. The devoted dog became a familiar and comforting presence for grieving visitors before his death in 2021.

Moved by the story, lawmakers in Brazil introduced legislation that now permits cats and dogs to be buried alongside their owners in family plots, provided health and sanitary rules are respected. Supporters say the law recognises the deep emotional bond many people share with their pets.
With Brazil home to one of the world’s largest pet populations, the new measure reflects a growing cultural shift that sees animals not just as companions but as part of the family, even after goodbye.
