Extreme Heat Is Affecting Parmigiano Reggiano Production

todayAugust 17, 2026

Background

Even one of Italy’s most iconic foods is feeling the effects of extreme heat.

According to Reuters, rising temperatures are placing increasing pressure on the production of Parmigiano Reggiano. When temperatures climb above 40°C, cows tend to eat less, which can lead to a reduction in milk production of up to 10 per cent.

Farmers and cheese producers are also facing higher costs as they work to keep animals, milk and cheese warehouses cool during periods of intense heat.

The situation demonstrates how changing weather conditions can affect every stage of food production, from farming and animal welfare to storage and manufacturing.

Could climate change continue to affect the availability and price of the foods we love?
