Background

Disney is reimagining some of its most iconic songs… in sign language

Walt Disney Animation Studios is launching Songs in Sign Language on Disney+ this April 27, a brand new project that brings American Sign Language (ASL) into animated storytelling.

The series reworks fan-favourite moments like “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” “The Next Right Thing,” and “Beyond,” with fully reanimated scenes where the lyrics are expressed through ASL

Working alongside Deaf artists and choreographers, the team led by director Hyrum Osmond, focused on making every detail authentic, from hand movements to facial expressions, so the performances truly reflect how sign language is experienced.

The result? A powerful new way for Deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences to connect with Disney stories… with characters now communicating directly with them on screen for the first time

This could be a huge step forward for representation in animation
