Having a strong preference for sweet flavours could be connected to the way a person approaches rewards and risks, according to a recent study.
Researchers examined 149 young adults and compared their taste preferences with their choices during a series of decision-making tasks.
People who preferred very sweet flavours were more likely to choose a smaller immediate reward instead of waiting for a larger one. However, this pattern mainly appeared when one of the available rewards could be received immediately.
The same participants were also more likely to choose safer options when presented with lottery-style decisions involving different probabilities and rewards.
Researchers cautioned that the findings do not necessarily mean that people with a sweet tooth are generally more impulsive. Their choices may instead reflect a stronger preference for certainty and rewards that are immediately available.
