Who says cartoons are only for kids?

A widely shared statistic claims that around 25% of SpongeBob SquarePants viewers are adults without children, highlighting just how far the cartoon’s appeal stretches beyond its younger audience.

Considering SpongeBob has been on our screens since 1999, perhaps that is not too surprising.

Millions of people who originally watched SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward and Mr. Krabs as children are now adults themselves, but that does not necessarily mean they have stopped visiting Bikini Bottom.

Nostalgia is undoubtedly part of the appeal, but SpongeBob has also become famous for humour that works on multiple levels.

Some jokes that went completely unnoticed as children suddenly make a lot more sense when watching the show years later.

Add in endlessly quotable characters, memorable episodes and the comfort of watching something familiar, and SpongeBob has managed to remain part of pop culture for more than 25 years.

So yes, you might technically be an adult now, but that does not mean you have to stop watching SpongeBob.

Are you still watching as an adult, or is there another cartoon you will never outgrow?
