The EU Is Phasing Out Single-Use Ketchup Packets and Condiment Sachets

todayJune 11, 2026

Background

Those familiar single-use ketchup packets and sauce sachets could soon become much less common across Europe.

New European Union rules aimed at reducing packaging waste will gradually encourage restaurants, cafés and hospitality businesses to move away from many single-use condiment containers.

Instead, businesses will be encouraged to use refillable dispensers, reusable containers and traditional table-service bottles. The goal is to significantly reduce unnecessary packaging and cut down on waste entering the environment.

Supporters say the changes represent an important step towards more sustainable practices, while others wonder whether customers will miss the convenience of individually packaged portions. Either way, diners can expect to see noticeable changes in the years ahead.
