The Greek island of Santorini has introduced new measures aimed at improving the welfare of the donkeys commonly used to transport tourists along its steep pathways.
The restrictions come after years of debate surrounding the treatment of the animals, which often carry visitors through some of the island’s most challenging terrain.
Among the new rules is a restriction preventing tourists weighing more than 100 kilograms from riding the donkeys. Authorities say the measure is designed to reduce overloading and improve conditions for the animals.
The move has sparked discussion online, with many praising the decision while others argue that tourism destinations should go even further in protecting working animals. The conversation has once again highlighted the balance between tourism and animal welfare in some of the world’s most popular destinations.
