Study Finds 30% of Adults Sleep With the Lights On

Background

If you need a light or the TV on to fall asleep, you’re not alone. Studies suggest around 30% to 40% of adults sleep with some form of artificial light, often for comfort or routine.

However, even low levels of light can interfere with your body. Your eyelids do not fully block light, meaning your brain can still detect it and disrupt your natural sleep cycle.

This can lead to poorer sleep quality, including less deep rest and more fragmented sleep. Over time, research has also linked sleeping in a lit room to increased heart rate, insulin resistance, and even a higher risk of conditions such as obesity and heart disease.

There are also potential effects on mental health, with links to higher levels of anxiety and mood changes.

Experts recommend sleeping in as dark an environment as possible. If you need some light, a dim, warm-toned option is better than bright or blue light.

Sometimes, improving your sleep can be as simple as turning off the lights.
