todayMarch 13, 2026

Background

A door-to-door collection service for beverage containers is being extended to all of Malta and Gozo as part of efforts to make recycling easier for residents.

The government announced that around €1.2 million has been invested in new vans and an upgraded IT system to support the expansion of the service nationwide.

The initiative began as a pilot project last year in 20 localities, before expanding to 30 areas across Malta. In just eight months, around 1.3 million containers were collected, showing strong participation from residents.

The service allows people to book container collections from their homes, with a dedicated call centre and digital system helping to organise requests more efficiently.

New vans equipped with bulk-input technology will also improve efficiency. Previously, each vehicle could serve around 40 homes per day, but the upgraded system is expected to increase capacity to about 60 homes daily.

Officials said the nationwide rollout aims to make recycling more accessible for everyone, helping more households participate in environmental efforts and contribute to protecting the environment across the Maltese Islands.
