Background

We all know the lyrics, but there’s always a hidden story behind the music. Here are 10 fun facts about some of the world’s favourite songs that might surprise you:

1. “I Will Always Love You” – Whitney Houston
This power ballad was originally written and sung by Dolly Parton in 1973 as a farewell to her business partner. Whitney’s version in The Bodyguard made it a global anthem.

2. “Yesterday” – The Beatles
Paul McCartney literally dreamt the melody. He woke up with the tune in his head and wrote it down, convinced he must have heard it somewhere before.

3. “Wannabe” – Spice Girls
The famous “zig-a-zig-ah” wasn’t planned. It was a spur-of-the-moment ad-lib in the studio that stuck  and became pop history.

4. “Someone Like You” – Adele
Adele admitted she cried through most of the recording session, which is why the raw emotion in the vocals feels so real.

5. “Billie Jean” – Michael Jackson
The signature baseline came to MJ in the backseat of a car. He said he couldn’t get it out of his head and knew instantly it would be a hit.

6. “Shape of You” – Ed Sheeran
It wasn’t meant to be Ed’s song at all. He wrote it for Rihanna but ended up keeping it . Good choice!

7. “Dancing Queen” – ABBA
This classic was the only ABBA track to hit No.1 in the US, and it’s still played at nearly every wedding and party worldwide.

8. “Bohemian Rhapsody” – Queen
Freddie Mercury never revealed the meaning behind the lyrics. Bandmates said he wanted listeners to interpret it their own way.

9. “Like a Virgin” – Madonna
Despite the title, the song isn’t about innocence , it’s about finding love so powerful it makes you feel brand new.

10. “Rolling in the Deep” – Adele
The phrase “rolling in the deep” is London slang meaning to have someone’s back completely. The song, of course, is about when that loyalty breaks.

Songs we’ve heard a million times still have secrets to tell and that’s what makes music so magical.

And on Magic, we’re playing your favourite songs every time you tune in. 🎶
